Jamie Burchett…

is a trombonist, educator, and composer/arranger based in St. Louis, Missouri. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Illinois Wesleyan University and Master’s degrees in Jazz Studies from Queens College - CUNY and Michigan State University.

Born into an artistic family, with a father working as a freelance comic book artist, Burchett was encouraged at a young age to explore all artistic endeavors. He developed a love for jazz during his high school years and found his voice in the trombone. His talent was recognized by Tom “Doc” Streeter and Burchett was awarded a full tuition free waiver to attend and represent Illinois Wesleyan University. Upon completing his Bachelor’s degree Burchett knew his next stop would be NYC to study jazz.

Burchett continued his education studying with jazz masters Antonio Hart, Michael Philip Mossman, David Berkman, and Jeb Patton at Queens College. His arrival in New York also began his studies with musical hero and trombone virtuoso Michael Dease. In addition to attending school he worked at the Louis Armstrong House Museum/Archives documenting artifacts and memorabilia sent into the archives from family and fans of Louis. He also began his professional teaching career by working part-time at the United Nations International School teaching brass students and arranging music for orchestra. Burchett’s performance opportunities were extensive and highlighted by performing with the late, great Jimmy Heath and recording a commercial big-band record at the renowned Astoria-Kaufman Studios.

Upon completing his education and two years of exploring New York, Burchett was presented with an opportunity to continue studying with his mentor, Michael Dease, at Michigan State University as a graduate assistant. At MSU he studied with jazz greats Rodney Whitaker, Etienne Charles, Reggie Thomas, Xavier Davis, and Diego Rivera. He was a member of the jazz trombone ensemble that won both internationally recognized awards from the International Trombone Association and The United States Army Band’s American Trombone Workshop in 2014. Jamie’s performance opportunities also included the Detroit Jazz Festival, performances in Trinidad and Tobago, outreach tours to schools all around Michigan, and tours with Christian McBride, Robin Eubanks, Peter Bernstein, and Jon Faddis.

In 2015 Burchett returned to St. Louis to pursue a career teaching, writing, and performing in the city that raised him. He teaches private lessons for trombone, jazz improvisation, music theory, and brass techniques. His students consistently win chair placements in STL All-Suburban bands, All-State bands, and earn superior ratings at solo & ensemble festivals. His studio has spots available as he continues to build an inclusive community of powerhouse trombone players.

Burchett currently teaches in the Hazelwood school district working at Northwest Middle School and West High School. He plays trombone with the Genesis Jazz Project, a STL based jazz ensemble featuring local musicians, educators, and up and coming high school students. He also performs regularly with a variety of ensembles including Lamar Harris’ Ensemble “The Georgia Mae”, St. Louis Low Brass Collective, NextGen Big Band, Renacer Latino Orchestra, Genesis Jazz Project, and Gateway City Band. His arrangements and compositions have been featured at Jazz at the Bistro, Sheldon Concert Hall, Delmar Hall, and BB’s Jazz, Blues, & Soups with professional and student-based groups.
